After a light start in the morning of finals day a ten to twelve knot breeze built to provide the sailors with ideal match racing conditions. MIRSKY's team continued their good form from the round robins to beat ROBERTSON's team in two straight races and proceed to the finals. POLLARD's and SUTHERLAND's teams had three tight matches in the other semi-final with SUTHERLAND eventually progressing to the finals with a 2-1 record against POLLARD.
The stage was set for a best of five final between SUTHERLAND and MIRSKY. The finals were upstaged for half an hour as ABN AMRO ONE and movistar had their own private match race to the finish of leg three of the Volvo Ocean Race. With that out of the way a series of close matches followed with SUTHERLAND managing to win three straight matches and emerging as winner of the 2006 CentrePort Wellington International Youth Match Racing Championship.
In the petit finals JUNIOR beat SPITHILL 2-1 to take out fifth place while Jamie WOODS' (AUS) team from the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia had two straight wins over Jonathan CLOUGH's (NZL) team from the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club to fill seventh place.
This year's Trans Tasman rivalry was won by the New Zealand teams with first, third, fifth and eighth places compared to the teams from Australia with second, fourth, sixth and seventh places.
