Laser New Zealand Championships 2006
Nelson, New Zealand

The ISAF Grade 3 Laser New Zealand Championships are underway in Nelson with close to 100 sailors doing battle for honours. After the opening two races Andrew MURDOCH (NZL) leads the way in the Laser, with Jo ALEH (NZL) on top in the Laser Radial.
The opening day in Nelson saw the Yachting New Zealand Olympic Sailing Squad stamp their authority on proceedings with team members MURDOCH and ALEH both holding the lead in their respective fleets.

MURDOCH tops the leaderboard after a bullet and a third in the opening two races. The day's other bullet went to Michael BULLOT (NZL), who lies second overall, one point back. David WEAVER (NZL) sit in third place after finishes of 2 and 5.

A tight Laser Radial fleet sees ALEH three points ahead of Australian Krystal WEIR (AUS) after the Kiwi started with a 2,1. WEIR has already got her year off to a flying start with victory at the ISAF Grade 1 Sail Melbourne and second place at the ISAF Grade 1 Laser Australian Championship. She was quick off the mark again in Nelson, taking the bullet in the opening race, before a fifth in race two. Just one point behind her in third is Sara WINTHER (NZL).

Three more races are scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday, with the final two races of the ten race series set for Monday.

The event is being organized by the New Zealand Laser Association in association with the hosts, Nelson Yacht Club.
