Lightning World Championship 2005

Valparaiso, Chile

The Lightning World Championship is underway at the Higuerrillas Yacht Club in Valparaiso, Chile with the team of Alberto 'Tito' GONZALEZ, Diego GONZALEZ and Cristian HERMAN (CHI) following an impressive victory in the South American Championship at the weekend, by taking an early lead on their home waters.

A bullet in the Championship's opening race followed by a second place put GONZALEZ, GONZALEZ and HERMAN six points clear of fellow Chileans Cristóbal PÉREZ, Cristián PÉREZ and Francisco PEREZ, who are also coming off the back of success at the South Americans having secured the silver medal over the weekend.

The American teams of Jody LUTZ, Jay LUTZ and Derek GANGER and Amanda CLARK, Victor LOBOS and Will BROWN also started well, with the former in third after finishes of 3,6 and the latter fourth, scoring a ninth in race one, but following with a bullet in race two.

The International Masters Championship was, along with the South Americans, decided in the build up to the Worlds with victory going to the Candian team of Peter HALL, Philip KERRIGAN and Jay DEAKIN.

45 teams are competing in the Championship, with sailors coming from Chile, the USA, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Switzerland and Finland. Nine races are scheduled to decide the title, with the final day of racing on Saturday.
