Soling World Championship 2006
Annapolis, Maryland, USA

The GUL team of Hans FOGH, Roger CHEERS and Goron DEVRIES (CAN) were crowned new Soling World Champions in Annapolis, USA, on Sunday, taking the title with a bullet in the final race. Fellow Canadians Peter HALL, Phillip KARRIGAN and Jay DEAKIN took second place.

The 2006 Soling World Championship ended in a perfect day, with two final races completed. FOGH, CHEER and DEVRIES put pressure on themselves when they were over early in race six, but responded in style with victory in race seven to ensure they took the World title, one that they are already planning to defend in 2007 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

A 2,7 finish was good enough to give the second step on the podium to HALL, KARRIGAN and DEAKIN, whilst third went to Gustavo WARBURG, Maximo SMITH and Miguel LACOUR (ARG), who improved steadily through the regatta after a bad start. The defending champions, Roman KOCH, Maxl KOCH and Gregor BORNEMANN (GER), finished fourth.

The KC1 Classic, awarded to boats built before January 1980, went to Howard MOSCROP, Larry VOTARY and Peter AKER (CAN), whilst the top woman finisher was another Canadian, Joanne ABBOTT, who was sailing with her husband Billy and Paul DAVIS.
