GONZALEZ Provides Home Win
Lightning World Championship 2005
Valparaiso, Chile
Chile's Tito GONZALEZ, sailing with his son, Diego GONZALEZ, and Cristian HERMAN, won the Lightning World Championship, sailed last week at Club de Yates Higuerillas in Valparaiso, Chile. A dominant display saw them score five bullets in the nine race series to emphatically follow up their win in the South American Championship a week earlier.
Second place went to the American team of David STARCK, Ian JONES and Scott IKLE with Pablo HERMAN, Luis Felipe HERMAN and Claus ENGELL (CHI) securing third.
45 Lightnings from Chile, the USA, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Switzerland and Finland sailed nine races with one discard, with GONZALEZ, GONZALEZ, and HERMAN's only moment of drama a tenth place in race three followed by an OCS in race four. The Chileans immediately recovered however, winning the next race, coming fourth in race six and then taking bullets in the final three races.
