At the start, Ainslie was left buried, but worked the shifts up the first beat rounding the top mark in twelfth position, both Flynn and Johnston rounded in the top five and put pressure on the regatta leader, who needed at least a top ten result to claim victory.
At the first leeward mark Ainslie had neither gained nor lost, Draheim rounded second with Flynn in sixth. Meanwhile, Rob Johnston dropped to ninth place. At this point still any of those four could have won the regatta and going up the second beat it looked like Bill Draheim would claim the title. Ainslie lost ten places to effectively end his championship hopes and at the second windward mark the advantage had shifted to Terry Flynn.
Flynn consolidated his position in the remainder of the race and, finishing fifth, claimed the title of J22 World Champion. Draheim finished second overall with Ian Ainslie mounting a brave comeback in the last race to finish third overall.
