Laser Pacific Coast Championship 2005
Cascade Locks, Columbia River Gorge, Oregon, USA

After three days of excellent racing on the Columbia River, the ISAF Grade 2 Laser Pacific Coast Championship in Oregon, USA came to an end at the weekend. It proved a successful event for the Canadian contingent who swept the top three places across the Laser and Laser Radial fleets.
Hosted by the Colombia Gorge Racing Association, twelve races were completed by just under 60 sailors in open Laser and Laser Radial fleets, with breezes ranging from eight to 16 knots in Cascade Locks, Orgeon.

Victory in the Laser class went to Canada's 2004 Olympic representative, Bernard LUTTMER (CAN). It is a win that looks likely to push him up from his current ISAF World Sailing Ranking of 26. Mike LEIGH (CAN) pushed LUTTMER the whole way and come the end only five points separated the two, with LUTTMER's six bullets ultimately proving the difference. David WRIGHT, Andrew CHILDS and John ROMANKO completed a Canadian clean sweep of the top five.

In the 25 strong Laser Radial fleet, a separate battle for points in the ISAF World Sailing Rankings was taking place between the ten women competitors. In only her second ISAF Graded event in the Radial, experienced Europe sailor, Victoria CROWDER (CAN) came to the fore. She recorded nine top three finishes, to not only win the battle amongst the women, but to claim victory in the open fleet as well. She now looks set to fly up the Rankings when they are next released on 29 June. Geoffrey BECK (CAN) scored more bullets than CROWDER but was unable to match her consistency. An eleventh place in the final race put paid to any chance he had of victory.

Magalie BONNEAU-MARCIL (CAN) came in third overall and second amongst the women, another good result to add to her victory in the ISAF Grade 2 U.S. Laser Nationals in April. Lisa ROSS (CAN) claimed fourth overall and third woman, completing a very successful Championship for the Canadians. Sixth overall and fourth woman, was Jennifer SPALDING (CAN). A disappointing result for the Canadian, who won the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship in 2002 and who is currently at number 12 in the Rankings, the highest placed sailor in the whole Championship.
