Brits On Top In Italy

Laser SB3 European Championship 2005

Riva Del Garda, Trento, Italy

Yesterday saw the first races on Lake Garda in Italy, for the 60 boats competing in this year's Laser SB3 European Championship, the Laser boat crewed by three people.

The strength of the British contingent was obvious from the start, with 43 boats lining up to take part. After the starting signal at 1300 hours local time Mark RUSHALL (GBR) and his team took the bullet in race one ahead of Matt JOHNSTON (GBR) and Tim PETERS (GBR). The two Italian crews led by Dario BADALAMENTI and Luca BACCI finished twelfth and 25th.

The Ora wind gradually became settled around 20 knots providing two more exciting races. PETERS came to the fore taking the bullet in both, to top the leaderboard after day one. The French team led by Luc VIDEAU, are second after a 5,3,4 record for the day. Gelen TRUSWELL's (GBR) team are third, after finishing strongly with a second place in race three. RUSHALL could not recapture his form from race one and drops to fourth just ahead of the Australian team led by Glenn BOURKE. The two Italian crews lie 13 and 24.

Tomorrow three more races are planned for today with the crews due on the water at noon and the starting signal at 1300.
