2004 Olympic silver medallists, Nick ROGERS and Joe GLANFIELD (GBR) started yesterday as defending European champions and looked every bit worthy of that title. The British pair took bullets in all three of their races to top the leaderboard. Behind them the number three team in the ISAF World Sailing Rankings, Álvaro MARINHO and Miguel NUNES (POR), took two bullets and a sixth to lie tied on points in second with Argentina's Javier CONTE and Juan DE LA FUENTE. New Rankings' leaders, Gideon KLIGER and Ehud GAL (ISR) are tied in sixth, seven points off the lead in a tightly packed top 15.
Gabrio ZANDONA and Francesco DELLA TORRE occupied the Rankings' top spot until KLIGER and GAL trumped them in the last Rankings' release of 1 June. The Italians started the day well with a third and second, but a DSQ in race three sees them tumble down the leaderboard to 30. Struggling after a DNF in yesterday's final race are the winners of the recent ISAF Grade 1 Holland Regatta in Medemblik, Mathew BELCHER and Nick BEHRENS (AUS). They started well with a second place and were third in race two before their gaskets broke, seeing them fall back to 14th by the finish and unable to compete in race three.
The young Australian team of Elise RECHICHI and Tessa PARKINSON (AUS) also suffered in the women's fleet after a poor result in race three. They capsized while dropping their spinnaker and ended the race 17. However, good results in races one and two, mean the two time winners and holders of the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship title in the 420, are still in touch in 14th place overall. Another Youth Worlds graduate, Pippa WILSON (GBR), sailing with crew Sheena CRAIG, faired better and lies sixth overall with a 3,7,5 record for the day.
A great start for 2004 Olympic gold medallist in the Europe, Siren SUNDBY (NOR) and crew Karianne MELLEBY (NOR) ended in disappointment, when an opening bullet was followed by two DNFs.
At the top of the leaderboard the familiar names of ISAF World Sailing Rankings' leaders, Ingrid PETITJEAN and Nadège DOUROUX (FRA) provides a stark warning to their competitors. With three bullets from three races, the French team echo the dominating start of ROGERS and GLANFIELD in the men's fleet. 2004 Olympic bronze medallists, Therese TORGERSSON and Vendela ZACHRISSON (SWE), are not far behind with a second place and two thirds leaving them third overall. Katarzyna TYLINSKA and Zuzanna GLADYSZ (POL) are giving the home fans something to cheer about with a fourth followed by two second places leaving them second. TYLINSKA has plenty of experience sailing, and winning, here in Gdynia and her and GLADYSZ's performance means they are the only Polish team in the top ten of either of the fleets.
Today the start of racing is due for 1100 again with the weather forecasters predicting winds of around 15 knots.
