43 competitors took part in the regatta on Lasers, Laser Radials, Cadets, Optimists and Funboards. The two racing days presented radically different challenges to the sailors with a slight breeze of 1-3 knots on day one amplified to 24 knots by the second day.
The regatta received support from the media as well, with action broadcast on the National channel, PRO TV. The winners were awarded with diplomas by the IOC and with some memorable prizes from the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Moldova.
In 2001 Moldova made an appearance at their very first Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Champion with Egor POROSENCOV finishing 38 in the Laser competition. Three years later and thanks to assistance from the ISAF Athlete Participation Programme, Moldova were back at the ISAF Youth Worlds, with Alexandr DENISIUC improving on their previous performance by finishing 34 in the Laser.
This year Moldova will again be represented at the ISAF Youth Worlds when the competition takes place from 14-23 July in Busan, Korea. Once more they will be aiming to make their mark in the competitive Laser competition, and with events like the Olympic Days regatta also taking place, the future development of sailing in Moldova is looking good.
