After two days of action on the Gulf of Naples, two-time world champion Jim RICHARDSON (USA), aboard Barking Mad, has taken the lead in the Farr 40 class at Rolex Capri Sailing Week 2007. The Farr 40 is one of four divisions - Comet, Mini-Maxi and Swan 45s make up the remaining three - competing from 15-19 May in this event organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in collaboration with the Yacht Club Capri.
Day one saw the 16 Farr 40s complete three windward-leeward races with Lang and Sue WALKER (AUS) dominating on Kokomo
. Olli Pekka LUMIJARVI (FIN), who has America's Cup veteran Dee SMITH
(USA) calling tactics for him on Siragusawa
, finished second to Kokomo
in race 1, with Massimo Stefano LEPORATI (ITA) third on Kismet
again led the pack in race 2 - this time followed by the two American entries: Helmut JAN on Flash Gordon
and RICHARDSON's Barking Mad
. The final race of the day saw the class's 2003 World Champion, Massimo MEZZAROMA (ITA), place first on Nerone
after a badly judged start by Kokomo
. Barking Mad
finished second, a position she carried forward into the overall standings - behind Kokomo
- at the day's end.
Cloudy skies gave way to sunshine, and the predicted rain did not arrive, before the starting signal sounded for day two of racing. With the course positioned between Capri and Naples and in 5-6 knots of breeze from the southeast, the Farr 40 fleet again traversed a windward-leeward course of approximately 8 nautical miles. Race 1 saw Enfant Terrible, owned by Gianluigi SERENA (ITA) and also with an America's Cup sailor - Paolo CIAN (ITA) - calling tactics, finish ahead of Barking Mad, followed by Carlo ALBERINI's (ITA) Calvi in third. In race 2 Nerone was first with Calvi and Dario FERRARI's (ITA) Cannonball in tow. Barking Mad placed fourth which bumped her into the lead position in the overall standings - a full 10 points ahead of Kokomo who placed 13-9 in Thursday's two races. Nerone sits third a further two points back.
