The Opening Ceremony in Qingdao

Qingdao International Regatta 2007

The Opening Ceremony of the 2007 Good Luck Beijing Sinopec Qingdao International Regatta officially began the 2007 Olympic Test Event in Qingdao, China on Sunday evening.
Drum Roll - Five gigantic red lacquered traditional Chinese drums,

Lights - On every building along the Qingdao coastline, the floating docks, the breakwater, the stage and the new lighthouse at the harbor entrance,

Camera - Over 100 official media photographers, thousands of amateur photographers in the audience and strategically positioned television booms,

Action - Starting at 19:45 the Host Committee and entertainers kicked off the Opening Ceremonies of the 2007 Good Luck Beijing Sinopec Qingdao International Regatta, the pre-Olympic sailing event, by performing Strike the Drum and Set Sail and other songs in Chinese and English. Spectators were treated to goodies from Haier and incredible laser show interspersed with a sailing slide show set to the theme song of Pirates of the Caribbean. Neither Johnny Depp nor a Jack Sparrow impersonator bounded across the stage, but several choral groups accompanied by the Hisense Symphony Orchestra of Qingdao, performed. The highlight was the Qingdao Children's Choir's performance of Dream on the Sailboat.

A representative from each of 49 countries and areas were escorted onto the stage by their Chinese hosts.

Official and warm greetings were extended to all by the representatives of the Host Committee, the City of Qingdao and ISAF. ISAF President Goran PETERSSON thanked the sponsors, Sinopec, Shcenker, Volkswagen, China Mobile, Volvo, Omega, Bank of China, Coca-Cola, Jasfeel, Haier, CNC and and reminded us all of the power and global reach of sailing.

The programme concluded with a fireworks display as only the Chinese can do. Imagine a continuous grand finale, and then some! Stay tuned. The competition starts soon.
