America's Cup 2007
Valencia, Spain

Chris DICKSON (NZL) led BMW ORACLE Racing to victory in the opening race of Louis Vuitton Act 13. In a topsy-turvy race in light and shifty winds, a perfect gybe-peel over the Defender Alinghi set up a big win for the American team, whilst a storming finish saw Team Shosholoza grab second place.

In a terrific start to the 2007 America's Cup season, race 1 of Act 13 had it all. Alinghi were over the line early, +39, who almost did not make the start line at all, led for most of the race until a spinnaker break, whilst a series of wind shifts made for a fascinating final leg.

+39 led round the final mark, but a spinnaker breakage saw them come to a virtual standstill, whilst Alinghi, who had gradually pulled back through the fleet took the lead out to the left. BMW ORACLE reeled in and edged ahead of the Defender and a perfectly executed gybe-peel set up a massive win. With the wind becoming increasingly shifty, Team Shosholoza and Mascalzone Latino - Capitalia both sped past the Defender to finish second and third respectively. Alinghi narrowly avoided losing another place, crossing just ahead of the fast finishing Emirates Team New Zealand to take fourth place.

So a great start for the Americans and a terrific result for Team Shosholoza, especially with their biggest rival for eighth overall on the Louis Vuitton Ranking, and the final slot qualifying for two bonus points, Areva Challenge, finishing back in ninth.

The America's Cup Match and Challenger/Defender Series are designated as ISAF Special Events.
