On Saturday evening the ISAF President officially opened Kiel Week by striking the ship bell at the town hall of the City of Kiel in the presence of thousands of visitors and Kiel citizens.
'I shall stay a little longer than planned.... and don't be surprised if I return to Kiel earlier than you expect' commented PETERSSON at the traditional reception of the City of Kiel for all race officers of Kiel Week.

In 1966 he had a memorable sail at Kiel and could also recall the trademark outstanding organization on the water, 'The race committee started a race despite dense fog and poor visibility, ....and they even located me sailing a Dragon on the race course!' admitted PETERSSON with a smile and good humour.
The ISAF President expressed his sincere thanks to all the voluntary helpers who contribute immensely to the success of Kiel Week. He made additional thanks received the partners and sponsors of the event, which are equally important and desirable in modern times! Last but not least, the ISAF President included the race organisation on the courses and ashore into his thanks by saying, 'In the name of ISAF and international yachting let me express my sincere thanks for all your hard work!'
This year the International Sailing Federation celebrates its 100th anniversary, and the President aims to include into the celebration on the water as many sailors as possible! 'Each regatta event worldwide is an integral part of our Centenary,' he stressed.
Whilst in Kiel, the President caught up with thousands of enthusiastic yachties who are visiting the city for the 125th anniversary of Kiel Week. During his first day he also found time to attend the Executive Committee Meeting of German Sailing Federation (DSV), the Reception of the City of Kiel for Presidents and Race Managers of the four yacht clubs in charge of the Kiel Week races and the BMW Cast-Off at Kiel Yacht Club.
