The breeze started as a northerly ended as an easterly in the low teens for the record 14 nations represented on Key Biscayne.
For the record 14 nations represented on Key Biscayne, the breeze started as a northerly and ended as an easterly in the low teens. The level of competition for this year's North American Trophy and Rowland Smith Trophy is top notch. All of the top ten in the ISAF World Sailing Rankings are at the event; and 20 of the top 30.
The leaderboard has been very active, as Fernando ECHAVARRI and Anton PAZ (ESP) have surged forward; as have reigning North American Champions Oskar JOHANSSON and Kevin STITTLE (CAN) and Tino MITTELMEIER and Niko MITTELMEIER (GER).
Double Olympic gold medallists Roman HAGARA and Hans-Peter STEINACHER (AUT) also had a great day. Scores of 2,1,8 move the Austrian pair up behind the MITTELMEIER brothers and put them in a very strong position once they can discard their 25th place from race 2.
The Rolex Miami OCR Champions and reigning World Champions BUNDOCK and ASHBY were hit (hard) by the French team of GUICHARD and GUYADER in race 3. The Australians port bow was holed and a one of the internal structural bulkheads was punched through. They have received redress for races 3, 4, and 5, and will complete the rest of the series in Greek Tornado.
The racing continues today, when fresh southeasterly breezes are expected.
The Tornado North American Championship is taking place as part of the Winter Circuit surrounding the ISAF Grade 1 Rolex Miami OCR.
