WIMRA was formed in 1996 to promote, coordinate and supervise women's international match race sailing and work for the inclusion of a women's match racing event in the Olympic Games. These goals are still forefront in the organization's focus.
Women's match racing has gone from strength to strength over the last few years. The number of skippers on the Women's ISAF World Match Race Rankings has grown from 126 at the end of 2003 to 151 in 2004, 185 in 2005 and 196 in 2006. There are seven ISAF Grade 1 Women's Match Racing events scheduled for 2007, with the ISAF Women's Match Racing World Championship taking place in St Quay, France from 6-11 August.
ISAF has a keen and long standing commitment to Women's Sailing, and both the ISAF Women's Sailing Committee and ISAF Women's Forum focus on the development of women's sailing.
