ISAF Athletes' Commission

Voting to determine the Olympic event representatives for the ISAF Athletes' Commission is now in progress online. For the six events where there was only one candidate, that candidate has been automatically elected. The remaining five events - Laser, Laser Radial, Star, Yngling and Tornado - had more than one candidate and voting will take place online to elect the representative.

Rules of Voting

Only athletes officially entered to the 2007 ISAF Sailing World Championships are entitled to vote. Athletes shall only vote for a candidate to the ISAF Athletes' Commission in the event in which that athlete is entered to compete at the 2007 ISAF Sailing World Championships.

In order to access the online voting an athlete will be required to enter his/her ISAF Sailor ID and password. All votes will be scrutinized to ensure that this requirement has been complied with. If an athlete casts a vote for a candidate not in his/her event the vote will not be valid and will not be counted.

Those sailors who have not submitted accurate ISAF Sailor IDs when entering the 2007 ISAF Sailing World Championships will not be able to access the online voting and will be requested to send their correct details to athletes@isaf.co.uk

Each athlete may vote only once. The vote an athlete casts will be final and athletes may not change their vote having voted. Voting will be determined by simple majority, with the candidate receiving the most votes by 2300 hours UTC (2400 hours BST/local time in Portugal) on Sunday 15 July 2007.elected as the event representative on the ISAF Athletes' Commission.

In the case of a draw in the number of votes, the athlete who is highest on the ISAF World Sailing Rankings as at 27 June 2007 will be elected.

Athletes without access to laptops may use a computer in the Race Office to vote.

About the ISAF Athletes' Commission

The Athletes Commission is composed of eleven athletes representing each of the eleven Olympic events, elected by the athletes themselves.
The Athletes Commission holds at least one meeting each year and meets with the ISAF Executive Committee, to which the Athletes Commission makes recommendations.

The Athletes Commission has the following objectives:

  • Be a non-political consultative body which can offer advice and assistance to ISAF on matters and issues of relevance to athletes and act as a link between the Olympic sailors and ISAF
  • Ensure that the Athletes points of view are presented to ISAF
  • Ensure respect of the rights of the athletes within the sport and draw up recommendations to that effect
  • Promote high standards of sportsmanship and ethical performance when competing/participating
  • Relate immediately to athletes competing/participating at the highest level and establish relationships to promote feedback to ISAF on matters concerning elite athletes
  • Establish a working group responsible for liaison with ISAF for ISAF Events to help ISAF respond to the needs of the athletes;
  • May put forward its recommendations/proposals to the ISAF Executive Committee for consideration
