DLA Piper announced today that the firm sponsored the winning team of the third annual Golden Rock Regatta in the Caribbean. Christopher Land, an associate in DLA Piper's New York office, was the skipper and helm of the boat, which won the regatta last Friday after taking first place in the final race from Frigate Bay, St. Kitts to Fort Orange, Statia.
The regatta kicked off Sunday, November 11 in Great Bay, Sint Maarten and races took place throughout the week in the Caribbean. The regatta commemorates the recognition of U.S. independence by the Netherlands in 1776 and also serves to attract tourism to benefit the various islands.
The Regatta Committee has accentuated the historical and cultural uniqueness of the participating islands to stimulate the growth of tourism and, in turn, the local economies. This year, the Golden Rock Regatta also chose four schoolchildren from Statia to ride along-side the racing boats to learn about sailing and the islands, as well as to form a bond with the ocean.
"We are very proud to have won this event as a team and excited to have the firm involved as a sponsor,"
said Christopher C. LAND, an associate in DLA Piper's New York office. "The program's format has evolved tremendously since the first regatta in 2005 and we are pleased to be a part of its growing popularity."
The inaugural regatta in 2005 included only eight yachts crewed by 70 sailors. However, the six-day event has since grown tremendously. This year, more than 20 boats and an estimated 150 participated. Unlike most other regattas organized in the region, these races are longer, with overnight stops, offering the unusual experience of sailing to a new island each day and experiencing each island's culture.
