Sail the World Weekend
Tasman Bay, New Zealand

Tasman Bay Cruising Club in Nelson, chose September 1st as the day to be part of the ISAF Sail the World weekend. Nelson locals were invited to try their hand at sailing keelers and the club was open to the public throughout the day.
Thirty-nine members of the public ranging in age from 16 to 60+ took up the opportunity to go sailing.

Nine club members made their yachts available for the day and the club offered two time slots for people to choose from.

A small group chose the morning and after a safety briefing set off under a blue sky and in very light breezes to sail a course starting inside the harbour and then out into Tasman Bay. A dying breeze and the turn of the tide to outgoing meant that some motor sailing had to be included to get the boats and their sailors back to the club ready for the next group.

The afternoon briefing included 28 potential sailors and once introduced to their skippers they were off to try their skills. After leaving the Nelson harbour through 'The Cut' they were into freshening sea breezes which provided some great sailing around a course that offered a variety of points of sail. Returning to the shelter of Nelson harbour through 'The Cut' with tide opposing wind provided some excitement for some. Back at the club some hot food waited and each participant received an ISAF certificate to mark their participation in the event.

Several enjoyed their time and signed on as crew for the new season and there was a steady stream of visitors through the club during the day finding out about what was on offer at TBCC.

Thank you again for helping ISAF celebrate 100 years of sailing - let's get out there and Sail the World!

"I am very proud to be President of the International Sailing Federation as we celebrate 100 years. What is evident is that the past one hundred years mark a period of vibrant and exciting growth for sailing. A period when the spirit of solidarity, friendship and passion for sailing has prevailed over borders, religions, genders and cultures. This weekend of 1-2 September, the "Sail the World" celebrations capture the very spirit of sailing. I am delighted at the number of events, clubs and classes all over the world partnering with ISAF as we join together to "Sail the World."' Göran PETERSSON
