King Harbor YC Captures US Match Race
Action from the final match
It was an exciting final match between King Harbor and Pequot Yacht Clubs for the 2007 Championship

US Match Racing Championship 2007

The King Harbor Yacht Club team were crowned winners of the US Match Racing Championship for the Prince of Wales Bowl, after four days of racing in Sonars off Newport.
The team of Brian ANGEL, Payson INFELISE and Michael DELANTY claimed the title after a repeat of last year's final.

The finals of this national championship - hosted by New York Yacht Club and sponsored by Rolex Watch U.S.A., Rosetta Stone and Dry Creek Vineyard - echoed the final battle of last year's event: ANGEL once again faced Pequot Yacht Club skipper Dave PERRY, the same formidable sailor he faced in 2006. Last year, PERRY and his crew triumphed; ANGEL found the battle this year to be tougher - but he also found his edge.

PERRY and his crew lead in the fourth race; but in a jibing duel on the final downwind leg, ANGEL passed PERRY - and he kept that lead until the finish to log a 3-1 record in the finals and capture this national title for King Harbor YC for a second time.

"The competition was amazing this year," said ANGEL, who also won the championship for King Harbor YC in 2005. "There were no easy wins, but my hardest matches were those against Dave [PERRY]." According to ANGEL, crew work and strong boat handling were key to his team's win, in a series where breeze ranged from light air to teen-strength blows. PERRY raced with Chris MUSELER and David MOFFET.

As winner of this championship, an ISAF Grade 3 event, ANGEL also earns invitations to the 2008 Knickerbocker Cup (ISAF Grade 2) and the 2008 Ficker Cup (ISAF Grade 3).

The Larchmont Yacht Club team of Jonathan SINGSEN, Andrew BUCKINGHAM and David JOHNSON won the petit-finals against the Bayview Yacht Club team of Chris VAN TOL and John Stephen Van Tol VAN TOL and Michael HOEY.

Eleven match-racing teams from throughout the USA competed for this national title.
