On Saturday 1 September 2007 twelve yachts from the Otago Yacht Club ventured onto the Harbour to celebrate 100 years of the International Sailing Federation.
The day dawned fine, calm and warm despite forecasts of gusty winds. Crews enjoyed a coffee before an 07:00 briefing, notable for its brevity and then out onto the harbour. Tidal restrictions meant it was either early morning or late in the day. Instead of a round the marks race, sailors put their skills to the test plucking cards from various boat wrecking structures like wharves and breakwaters. Light breezes provided pleasant sailing on some parts of the course with motoring as an alternative. A Sheriff patrolled the course looking for misdemeanours and errors later handing out novel penalties to offenders.
The course completed, everyone returned to the Club for a hearty breakfast of cereal, fruit, sausages, eggs, baked beans, spaghetti and toast. The winner on the day was Casta Diva and although he motored the course and received harsh criticism for the state of his yacht (no mast and coach work being rebuilt) Peter gave generously of his prize later that afternoon, some might argue too generously.
The day was all about having fun, socialising and enjoying the water and with 40 people in attendance it bodes well for the forth coming season.
Thank you again for helping ISAF celebrate 100 years of sailing - let's get out there and Sail the World!
"I am very proud to be President of the International Sailing Federation as we celebrate 100 years. What is evident is that the past one hundred years mark a period of vibrant and exciting growth for sailing. A period when the spirit of solidarity, friendship and passion for sailing has prevailed over borders, religions, genders and cultures. This weekend of 1-2 September, the "Sail the World" celebrations capture the very spirit of sailing. I am delighted at the number of events, clubs and classes all over the world partnering with ISAF as we join together to "Sail the World."'
Formed in 1907, ISAF will be celebrating its 100th Anniversary throughout 2007.
