Sail the World Weekend
Darwin, Australia

To celebrate ISAF's "Sail the World" celebration of 100 years of sailing, DSC started the day with an open invitation to the Darwin population to come for a free sail on Darwin Harbour on some of the active keelboat fleet. This was advertised through the local newspapers and radio stations, and attracted some 50 plus people to give it a go.
Most of those who turned up on the day had done no or little sailing prior to the event. To them it became an ideal opportunity to try something different, and the club is hopeful of generating some additional membership.

Darwin Sailing Club is located in the Top End of the Northern Territory, Australia. With a total population in Darwin of approximately 120,000 people, and approx 3000 Km to the nearest active yachting centres, DSC has a membership of approx 1800 members, of whom only 150 are active sailors. The balance is either social members or cruising yachtsmen. Boats sailed range from off the beach junior classes and catamarans through to ocean racing yachts and cruising catamarans.

Once the formalities of the morning were completed, it was down to celebration 'Darwin Style', with the annual 'Sandbar Barbecue' scheduled during the low tide period of the afternoon, between 1200 and 1800 Hrs. The tidal range in Darwin is in the vicinity of 8 metres, so the opportunity arises to make the most of a sandbar located just to seaward of the club. The photos tell the rest. Rescue boats become a local 'bar', the Barbecue is fired up and there are fun and games for all who attend. Half an hour before, and half an hour afterward, the 'island' didn't exist. We even had to bring our own palm tree!

Thank you again for helping ISAF celebrate 100 years of sailing - let's get out there and Sail the World!

"I am very proud to be President of the International Sailing Federation as we celebrate 100 years. What is evident is that the past one hundred years mark a period of vibrant and exciting growth for sailing. A period when the spirit of solidarity, friendship and passion for sailing has prevailed over borders, religions, genders and cultures. This weekend of 1-2 September, the "Sail the World" celebrations capture the very spirit of sailing. I am delighted at the number of events, clubs and classes all over the world partnering with ISAF as we join together to "Sail the World."' Göran PETERSSON
