Fireball World Championship 2007
Lake Silvaplana, Switzerland
Richard ESTAUGH and Rob GARDNER (GBR) won the Fireball World Championship title as the Brits monoplized the medals on Lake Silvaplana, Switzerland.
Light winds predominated throughout the series in Switzerland and the final day was no different. Racing was held in a 5-10 knot northerly, with the gold fleet getting underway just before 15:00.
First around the windward mark were David EDWARDS and Simon POTTS (GBR), but they were later overtaken by ESTAUGH and GARDNER. The overnight leaders Vince HOREY and Andy THOMPSON (GBR) were way back in the fleet. ESTAUGH and GARDNER managed to stay in front and also win the Worlds 2007 ahead of HOREY and THOMPSON, whilst Tom JEFFCOATE and Mark HOGAN (GBR) won the bronze medal.
Places four to seven also went to British teams. Australians Heather MACFARLANE and Chris PAYNE where eighth ahead of Martin KUBOVY and Roman ROCEK (CZE), who won the Alpine Challenge last week. The defending World Champions Erich MOSER and Ruedi MOSER (SUI) had a poor final race and dropped out of the top ten in the final results.
The Fireball World Championship 2007 ended with the official diner and the prizegiving. The next Fireball World Championships are going to be held in Thailand in spring 2008.
