ISAF Race Officials are the central part of one of the most important roles at ISAF. Put simply, without them, fair and competitive racing would not be possible. Right around the world ISAF has a network of International Judges (IJ), International Measurers (IM), International Race Officers (IRO) and International Umpires (IU) who ensure fair racing week in, week out.

First-time applicants for ISAF International Race Officials status must meet a stringent set of criteria as detailed in the ISAF Regulations. Applications must be approved by the applicants Member National Authority (MNA) and are carefully evaluated by the Sub-committees of each of the four Race Officials disciplines before being approved or rejected by the ISAF Race Officials Committee during the ISAF Annual Conference held every November. Once approved, International Race Officials hold ISAF approved status for four years, after which they must apply to the ISAF Secretariat to have their status renewed.
For 2009, ISAF is launching a new, simpler, and more efficient system for creating and processing first applications and renewals. This will help to minimize costs for the administration and reduce the work load for Race Officials, ISAF and its MNAs.

Charley COOK (USA), chairman of the ISAF Race Officials Committee, says: "I am pleased to advise that ISAF have completed the first phase of a plan to fully automate the application process for new and renewal appointments of International Race Officers, International Measurers, International Judges and International Umpires. For this year, applicants will complete a PDF application available from the ISAF website. This will enable the Race Officials Committee and the relevant Sub-committee to more effectively process each application."

The new digital system contains full details of the criteria applicants must meet and how to complete and submit a new application or renewal. All candidates for IJ, IM, IRO or IU status and existing officials whose appointment expires this year can access the new system at: www.sailing.org/raceofficials/roapplications.

All applications must be submitted to ISAF by 1 September 2009. In case of first applications, it is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that the application is made well in advance so that the applicant's MNA can evaluate the application and if satisfied, submit the necessary endorsement before the deadline.
