Gasper VINCEC
Gasper VINCEC is new at the top of the Finn Rankings

ISAF World Sailing Rankings

There are three new leaders in the latest release of the ISAF World Sailing Rankings on 4 February 2009 with Spain hitting the top of the national standings.
In the first release of the ISAF World Sailing Rankings in 2009, Spain takes the limelight, as the only nation to hold two world #1 spots. Consequently the Spanish team moves clear of Australia at the top of the national standings, reward for their strong start to the ISAF Sailing World Cup series.

New Leaders

Of the new leaders, Gasper VINCEC (SLO) jumps up two places to hit the top in the Finn Rankings, becoming the first Slovenian sailor to achieve a world #1 ranking. The other changes at the top of the Ranking lists come in the Men's Keelboat and Women's Two Person Dinghy events.

Brazil's Robert SCHEIDT and Bruno PRADA return to the top of the Star Rankings. In the Women's 470, Japan is back at the top of the Rankings as former world #1 skipper Giulia CONTI (ITA) switched to the Women's Match Racing event at the Rolex Miami OCR. Ai KONDO and Naoko KAMATA return to the world #1 spot they held during July and August last year.

The opening two events of the ISAF Sailing World Cup series, Sail Melbourne and US SAILING's Rolex Miami OCR, have seen some strong performances from the world's top ranked sailors. Laser Radial world #1 and Beijing Olympic gold medallist Anna TUNNICLIFFE (USA) won both events at Melbourne and Miami to get her World Cup campaign off to the perfect start. Marina Alabau (ESP), top ranked sailor in the Women's RS:X, also scored victory in Miami. Men's RS:X world #1 and Olympic silver medallist Julien BONTEMPS (FRA) also made a solid start to his World Cup campaign with a fifth place finish at Miami.

New Stars

Along with the established names there were some impressive performances from the younger generation of stars who will be aiming to make their mark at London 2012. Pavlos KONTIDES (CYP), the only two-time winner of the Laser event at the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship, won an ISAF Sailing World Cup silver medal at his first outing in Miami. He gains 16 places in this Ranking release up to #23. Twenty year old Dutch windsurfer Dorian VAN RIJSSELBERGE, at #15 in the Men's RS:X Rankings, went one better than KONTIDES and won his first World Cup event at Miami. Another 20 year old, Croatia's Tina MIHELIC, has also made an impressive start in the Laser Radial events with top ten finishes at both Melbourne (second) and Miami (eighth).
