Sixteen candidates, ranging in age from 15-59 took part in the first ever ISAF 'Train the Trainers' Workshop in Abu Dhabi during the week of the 25-29 September. Eight of the candidates were recognized as being part of the future Training infrastructure of the U.A.E Federation and the other eight were young sailors who had been identified as becoming Instructors once the U.A.E Inspection for ISAF Recognized Training Status is completed.

The workshop was held at The Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club (ADIMSC) and consisted of a combination of Shore based discussions and water based practical training sessions, spanning a total of 20 hours.

In addition to running workshops designed to help the UAE Trainers develop infrastructure and system processes, the ISAF team of Dan Jaspers, Richard Percy and David Ritchie also ran on-the-water coaching sessions which concentrated on the briefing/de-briefing skills so necessary for any good Instructor. These sessions were run in the evenings once the adult trainers had finished. All of the young candidates attended every day and showed much skill in what they were asked to do.

These sessions helped the U.A.E Federation by:

• Securing extra funding from the General Authority of Youth and Sport Welfare secured for more workshops.
• Increasing interest and support from Sheik Khaled Bin Zayed, the Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Emirates Heritage Club.
• Leadership Qualification and Authority of Sport / Welfare dept fully supportive of youth development in U.A.E
• The development of a revised U.A.E / ISAF Syllabus to be launched and Logbooks / teaching resources to be printed in late 2009 / early 2010.

With more and more countries getting in contact every week and the ISAF Annual Conference coming up in November, the future looks healthy where training is concerned.
