Anticipation is high for the first-ever European event of the ISAF Sailing World Cup, with 400 competitors from 40 nations already registered for the Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE this April.
The 40th edition of the Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE, held from 4-10 April in the bay of Palma, has generated great expectation following its inclusion in the ISAF Sailing World Cup. Following the first two events, Sail Melbourne and the Rolex Miami OCR, the World Cup will make its debut in Europe with the Majorcan regatta, sponsored for the fourth consecutive year by the leading Spanish insurance company MAPFRE and organized by four clubs of the bay of Palma de Mallorca: Club Nàutic S'Arenal, Real Club Náutico de Palma, Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa and Escuela Nacional de Vela de Calanova.

To date, over 250 teams and almost 400 competitors have already entered the most important Olympic sailing regatta in Spain. As well as its status as one of seven events of the ISAF Sailing World Cup, the Sofia will also be a trial event for the RFEV pre-Olympic team together with the Semana Olímpica de Andalucía - Regata de Carnaval which starts in Cadiz on Thursday.

40 Nations

Perhaps the most impressive figure is found in the number of participating nations. Forty nations are already represented on the entry lists of this 40th edition of the Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE. Competitors from all over Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, South America, USA and Oceania will meet in the bay of Palma at Easter.

Nine Olympic events will take part in the regatta (there will be Women's Match Racing this year) as well as the Paralympic 2.4mR and the Dragon as invited class. The largest number of entries is registered in the Men's One Person Dinghy - Laser (59) followed by the Men's Two Person Dinghy - 470 (34) and the Women's One Person Dinghy - Laser Radial (32). High numbers have also already registered inthe Men's Two Person Dinghy High Performance - 49er (29) and Men's One Person Dinghy Heavy - Finn (28).

The organizers of the Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE have invited all the sailing medallists from the 2008 Beijing Olympics Games as well as the medallists from the 2008 World and European Championships.

The Consortium Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía, the managing body of the Majorcan regatta which welcomes this year car firm "Opel" as new collaborator, has distributed the classes among the four organizing clubs as follows: Men's and Women's 470, Finn and 49er in Club Nàutic S'Arenal; Star and Dragon in Real Club Náutico de Palma; Men's and Women's RS:X, Laser and Laser Radial in Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa and Paralympic 2.4mR in Escuela Nacional de Vela de Calanova.
