Aussies Maintain Lead Into Final Day At 49er Worlds
Frantic action at the mark in today's racing
Nathan OUTTERIDGE and Iain JENSEN are four points ahead going into the final day at Garda

49er World Championship 2009
Riva del Garda, Italy

Australia's Nathan OUTTERIDGE and Iain JENSEN held on to their overall lead on the penultimate day of racing at the 49er Worlds although Austrians Nico DELLE - KARTH and Nikolaus RESCH have closed the gap at the top to just four points.
After a brief rainstorm in the morning complete with lightning and thunder, the sailors were sent out on Lake Garda with a fresh wind of 11 knots. Aussies Nathan OUTTERIDGE, 2008 World Championship winning helm, and Iain JENSEN maintained their lead despite Nico DELLE - KARTH and Nikolaus RESCH of Austria winning the day. The Austrian pair sailed a 1, 2, 1 for the day moving them within four points of the leaders who sailed a 7, 4, 6.

Stevie MORRISON and Ben RHODES (GBR) moved back into contention, climbing back into third place overall after being able to discard yesterday's "pain-in-the-butt" 20th place finish. The 2007 World Champions are now just seven points off the overall lead. In contrast, Italian brothers Pietro SIBELLO and Gianfranco SIBELLO had a rather uninspiring day with 6, 6, 14 scores and a consequent drop to fourth overall, although they are only one point behind the Brits.

Tomorrow, in the final day of racing, and the local support will be hoping for an inspired-Italian comeback. There's no lack of talent in Garda, and this is meant not only as a compliment to the SIBELLOs, but also towards the entire international gold fleet. Without their skill; their tight competition; their ups-and-downs; the Championship would lack its fascination, its high drama and suspense.

In the silver fleet, Peter BURLING and Blair TUKE (NZL) continue to lead with Jan Hauke ERICHSEN and Hans Jakob DETHLEFFSEN of Germany leading the bronze.

Tomorrow the gold, silver and bronze groups will sail two races each. The final Medal Race will be sailed in the early afternoon. Towards late afternoon, the prizegiving and Closing Ceremony, will be held on Fraglia Vela Riva's splendid terrace.Riva is honoured to welcome Teresa LARA, ISAF Vice-President, to the event to preside over the awards-giving and the Closing Ceremony. This afternoon she had a chance to experience first-hand the Men's Two Person Dinghy High Performance Olympic boat as she took a 49er sailboat out on the lake.
