Volvo Ocean Race 2005-2006

Richard MASON, aged 30, is no stranger to the Volvo Ocean Race, competing as trimmer on the boat that finished second in the 2001-2002 event. Now he has been named as trimmer/helmsman of Ericsson Racing Team for the 2005-2006 event.
Born in Sydney, Australia, and raised on the west coast of the north island of New Zealand, MASON is one of the most experienced offshore sailors of his age. He has successfully competed in and won nearly all of the major offshore races.

MASON has been involved with the construction of the Ericsson boat, together with building manager Jason CARRINGTON, at Green Marine, Lymington, Great Britain, from the beginning of the project. MASON has been responsible for the development of systems and the team's sail programme. Ericsson Racing Team previously announced Neal MCDONALD (GBR) as skipper and Steve HAYLES (GBR) as navigator.

MCDONALD said, 'Richard MASON is a great sailor with a great attitude. There are few sailors of his age with so much world-class offshore sailing experience. As strong as an ox and with a great understanding of many of the complex systems that are crucial in the Volvo Open 70, he will be an important part of our team.'

Ericsson announced its entry in the race on April 25. The Ericsson Racing Team is supported by Semcon as design and development partner.
