The 2009 Soling World Championship, hosted by the Etobicoke Yacht Club in Toronto, Canada is underway.
Solings started to arrive during the past week, especially local Canadian ones, but by Sunday morning many US boats started to arrive, and more are expected for Monday and Tuesday, the last two days of measurement. Past World Champions expected include George Nehm and Marcos Ribeiro, who are also the current South American Champions, and from Germany Roman Koch, Maxl Koch and Gregor Bornemann, who currently hold the European title. They will be facing the finest Canada has to offer including Billy Abbott sailing with Paul Davis (NOR) and Peter Hall with Phillip Kerrigan and Gavin Flinn and another past world champion Hans Fogh, Roger Cheer and Gord Devrie. From USA comes Peter Galloway and Charlie Kamps, not forgetting the legendary US sailor Stuart Walker, who at age of 86, will come with Austrian reinforcement from former Olympic sailor Georg Stadler and Volker Moser.
Races will start on Wednesday and will go until Sunday, with a total of nine races scheduled. For more about the event go to www.solingworlds.com.
