Day 2 of the Tornado Worlds started with shifty conditions on the water. The 2 races were very difficult and the boats had to wait for more than1 hour before the wind direction was stable enough to start racing. Southeast to east - 14 knots and gusty.
The Dutch team of Mitch BOOTH/Herbert DERCKSEN, who are the current leaders of the ISAF World Sailing Rankings, had a very good day with a second and a first to pull them up into 11. But the best day was for the British pairing of Leigh MCMILLAN /Mark BULKELEY who placed 3,3 to take the lead going into today's racing.
"The races today weren't easy. Really shifty and we tacked and jibed at least 10 to 12 times on each leg", said Mitch.
"In such conditions one little mistake cost us 20 positions in 200 meters and it was difficult to recover them. The first race was easier than the second"[ioID]448E135ED8574270BCA1E36DF24F32DB/04_tornado_worlds_day2.jpg>
French Youth team Francois GABART/David ROMAIN had another excellent result, finishing fifth in race 3.
"We feel very motivated to be sailing amongst the best sailors in the world. I'd rather be the last Youth but 15 overall in such a high level fleet," said Francois GABART. "But it would be excellent if we could win the Youth Title and finish top 15." added David ROMAIN.
For those countries seeking the final chance for Olympic Qualification and chasing the four qualification slots on offer at the Tornado Worlds, it is looking particularly good for Portugal, with Diego CAYOLLA/Nuno BARRETTO placed 9 overall, and Russia's Andrey KIRILYUK/Valery USHKOV who are currently 12 overall, both of which are currently the highest placed unqualified nations.
