Australian National Championships
Pittwater

Despite disappointing points on the final day of racing, Richard Perini, skipper of Corinthian Doors has won the Australian National Farr 40 OD Championships.
The four-day Championships have been hosted by the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club through the nine races staged on the Palm Beach Circle off Pittwater. The Championships were staged from Thursday November 9 - Sunday November 11, 2001

Boat of the Day was the South Australian Farr 40 OD, War Games, skippered by David Urry. In early racing, Urry, with a new crew, had noted the difference in sailing conditions on the Palm Beach circle in the Pacific Ocean compared to conditions in the calmer waters off South Australia.

The settlement of the protest lodged by Buon Giorno (Steven Ellis) against Brighton Star (David Gotze) resulted in change in the provisional results. Emotional Hooligan (Marcus Blackmore) was places second and Team Shockwave (Neville Crichton) was third.

Royal Prince Alfred Race Administrator Denis Thompson said, "Today's racing was again very, very close. The conditions were good with a 12-15 knot Easterly on a smooth sea."

"Stephen Ellis on Buon Giorno and Philip Coombes on Farr Too Much Fun had a day of highs and lows with first places in races 8 and 9 respectively and then well back in their other races." said Mr. Thompson. " Meanwhile, Richard Perini and Marcus Blackmore were caught in the pack and intent on covering each other."

Corinthian Doors came in 9th and 6th in the last two races while Emotional Hooligan was 8th in both of today's races.

Richard Perini said, "Today's racing was unbelievably difficult with three boats in contention to win. It was a major issue between us, Team Shockwave and Emotional Hooligan."

In paying tribute to his crew, Mr. Perini said, "It is the second race our tactician Ian Brown has done with us. He positioned the boat magnificently for the whole regatta and kept his cool under pressure. The results are a fitting testament to his perseverance and patience."

"I'd also like to pay tribute to crewmember Darren Jones, " said Mr. Perini. "He is in charge of setting up the boat, trimming, boat speed, sail design and selection. He did a magnificent job."

"Overall, it was terrific racing and once again, the Royal Prince Alfred's Yachting Administrator, Denis Thompson and his team did a fantastic job. The regatta management was faultless," said Mr. Perini.

"It was a tough series", said Denis Thompson. "The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club congratulates Mr. Perini and his crew for their win.

Previous winners of the three-year old National Farr 40 OD Championships are Marcus Blackmore (1999) and John Calvert-Jones (2000).
