Australian Yachting Federation Change Advertising Licence System

The Australian Yachting Federation Board has made a number of significant concessions prior to the launch of the AYF Advertising Licence System on July 1, 2001.

The Board considered input from club representatives and sailors at the recent AYF Annual Conference before amending its policy approach to the code, which is part of the new ISAF Racing Rules of Sailing (2001-2004). "There was widespread support for the notion that where there is a genuine commercial or personal financial benefit from the display of advertising there should be an appropriate contribution to the future development of the sport," AYF Chief Executive Officer Phil Jones said. "The main issue that concerned those at the conference, and that is reflected in other correspondence from clubs and owners, is the equity of the fee system." From July 1, all boats carrying advertising while racing will be required to display an Advertising Licence sticker in order to comply with the requirements of the Racing Rules of Sailing. Junior and Youth Classes may obtain exemption on application. In the initial year there will be a flat fee of just $25 for the Advertising Licence. This is down from fees varying from $100 to $850 as first proposed (and outlined in the new AYF Racing Rules of Sailing). AYF Addendum F will be amended to reflect the above changes and an application form can be found in the rules book on the AYF web site. "In cases where the advertising was affixed by a previous owner, and no financial benefit has been gained by the existing owner, the fee will be waived," Mr Jones said. "But an Advertising Licence is still required." All boats registered for an Advertising Licence will be listed on the AYF website (www.yachting.org.au). For an additional fee of $25, the listing can be accompanied by the names of up to three advertisers or sponsors with links to relevant websites. Applicants will encouraged to make a voluntary contribution of 1% of sponsorship income derived. All funds will be directed to the development of junior and youth sailing. Boats owned by affiliated yacht clubs or member yachting associations of the AYF will need an Advertising Licence while racing, but these will be issued free. Over the next nine months, an extensive consultation process will be conducted to develop an appropriate fee structure for year two and beyond.
