Round the Island Race

Mandrake was the clear winner today in the 65th Hoya Round the Island Race, a race around the Isle of Wight, UK.
Final results are in for the Hoya Round the Island Race 2001, the biggest and most popular race of its kind in the world, which proved to be the fastest ever in the race's 65 year history.

Of the 15,000 sailors aboard 1,735 yachts, the last yacht, Malcolm Rittman's Bell Seamew 'Dimple', did not cross the finish line until 2059hrs BST. For a large number of the yachts, simply completing the 'London Marathon of sailing' and being awarded the traditional Hoya Round the Island Race 'finisher's tankard' is an achievement - there were 1,456 finishers this year, the most finishers ever in this race.

Though not the fastest yacht in the fleet, the 'handicap' system used the by the race organisers to level out the playing field, revealed 'Mandrake' as the clear winner
