Sail The Gulf 2001

Whilst the 470 sailors took to the waters on Sunday the Lasers found themselves joining the spectators sunbathers on the beach.
The lack of winds in the morning led to the cancellation of both Laser races, whilst only one of the afternoon's 470 events eventually took place. The one race that was held took place over a shortened course.

Christian Rinder and Arthur Thuringer, sailing together for the first time, were first across the line, commenting afterwards that they had thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon's sailing. Of the two all-female crew, Marina Foufaeva and Marina Baranova of Russia finished third, with Inge and Kristin runge of Germany in sixth place. The UAE team was in 8th place.

Axel Runge, who has traveled with his daughters to Doha once again this year, is to take to the waters with the Laser sailors. Unused to such a small light boat, he commented that his first day's practice "Was an experience. The boat sailed, but not quite in the way I intended. Compared to the boats I'm used to, a Laser feels like a surfboard designed for those who are too lazy to stand up; but I'm enjoying the experience all the same!"

Racing today (Monday) will begin (weather permitting) at 10 am with the 470s out on the water in the morning, and the Lasers in the afternoon, starting at 2 pm.
