Scheidt Looking Good Going Into Finals

Laser World Championships
Cork

A shifting 14 knot westerly wind with a large south westerly swell gave perfect conditions for the last day of the preliminary round of the Laser Senior World Championship.

Robert Scheidt from Brazil today showed why he has won two Olympic medals and more Laser World Championships than anyone else. Today's racing was not about who was winning but by how much he was winning by as Scheidt pulled out a comfortable lead in both of the group races he was sailing in. After the race Scheidt said "I feel pretty good. I didn't make many mistakes and I had good speed both upwind and downwind. My two starts were safe and clean and I used my boat speed to good advantage. I feel very happy about the race and I have good confidence. The conditions of waves and 14 to 18 knots felt really good and fast - like sailing in Brazil!"

Roope Suomalainen from Sweden had nearly as good a day scoring a first in his first race and a second to Scheiidt in the second race of the day but his earlier performance has not been as consistent as Scheidt. Karl Suneson SWE maintained his second overall position with a 3rd and 8th place. "It was not so good for today "he said "but it was great sailing".

Scheidt will not have it so easy for the last two days as the top 80 sailors sail all together for the first time for the remaining 4 races. However, he has only been beaten twice in the last 7 races and, barring a complete reversal of form or bad luck is everyone's favourite to retain his world title.
