IMS European Championships
Marstrand

The first yacht in the 24-hour offshore race in the IMS Europeans was 'Ericsson' helmed by Sten Haeger (SWE), and they crossed the finish line after 22 hours and 42 minutes.

The race varied between 133 and 173 nautical miles for the different groups, which meant crossing the Kattegatt twice between Sweden and Denmark. The course was demanding and decisive, says Sten Haeger, helmsman on the Swedish yacht 'Ericsson' first across the finishing line and winner in group 3.

Apart from two windshifts a low pressure front brought strong winds , heavy rain and poor visibility says Jens Ulltveit Moe, helmsman on Fram XIV, who has now won two races in a row in group 1.

The large number of entries for the European Championships, suggests that the IMS handicap rule is gaining a lot of support in offshore racing. "It is very nice to be able to have a competitive rule for not so large cruiser/racers." says Sten Haeger. For the sport in general it must be good with standard cruisers/racers who also have a good secondhand value.

For tomorrow's courseraces both Heager and Ulltveit-Moe are hoping for winds of at least 8-12 knots and weak currents. Too strong currents make the unpredictable Marstrand Fjord a lottery says Sten Heager. And you never really know how the currents will run when the inner Hakefjord is "emptied" of water!.

In Friday's final the first third in every group, a total of 21 boats, are to race head to head for the positions in the European Championship. Jens Ulltveit-Moe is already convinced, after two races, that it will be very tight and close racing in the finals.
