First races in Italy provide close racing

29er European Championship

John Pink and Tom Weeks (GBR) started the defence of their European 29er title in Italy yesterday.

The reigning World and European Champions had arrived Monday, together with a large contingent of fellow British competitors, after a dash from the UK Nationals in England.Nearly half of the 45 plus fleet at the championship are from the UK and on the first day of racing it was Simon Marks and John Gimpson who won the first two races with Pink and Weeks in second.Marks and Gimpson were adjudged OCS in race three which went to Pink and Weeks. In the final race of the day, Helle Orum Nielson of Denmark, sailing with her former 420 crew rather than her brother, who crewed her to second at the UK Nationals, took the winning gun.Racing continues today, Friday, with light winds forecast.
