Second Magglingen CONFERENCE ON SPORT AND Development
Gathered in Magglingen , Switzerland for the Second Conference on Sport and Development, representatives from governments, the United Nations, NGOs and sports organizations spent two days assessing what has been achieved since the first conference held two years ago, discussing experiences, and sharing lessons learnt with the aim to further raise awareness of sport as a tool to promote development objectives at local, national and international level.
The Magglingen Conference on Sport and Development is the culminating event of the International Year of Sport and Physical Education (IYSPE) proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2003. Its objective was to take sport and development on to the next stage through the definition of a common agenda for future action thus ensuring that the positive momentum generated by the IYSPE continues beyond 2005.
Speakers and participants reaffirmed that access to sport and play is a basic human right and called upon all stakeholders to promote development, peace, education and health through sport.
Among IOC representatives talking at the conference: Sir Philip CRAVEN, President of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), Nawal EL MOUTAWAKEL, IOC member, and Urs LACOTTE, IOC director general.
Also attending and covering the event were 16 female journalists from developing countries invited by the IOC to take part in a two day information seminar at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne before traveling to Magglingen.
