Star World Championships

The Swedish team of ex-Finn sailor Fredrik Loof and Christian Finsgard won the Star World Championships on the last day by just one point, from New Zealand's Gavin Brady and George Iverson in Medemblik, The Netherlands.
The weather conditions were great, a steady 3 to 4 Beaufort when at 14.30 o' clock the sixth and last race of the Kinzo Star Worlds 2001 took off in Medemblik, The Netherlands. The teams sailed the 5th race in the morning, it was won by the Brazilian team, Torben Grael and Marcelo Ferreira. The Swedisch team Fredrik Lööf and Christian Finsgård ended in second position but took hold of the first place overall. In the sixth match the team from New Zealand, Brady and Iverson, lead all the way. It was their last chance for the world championship. The Swedish though finished third and consolidated their leading position overall, be it with the minimum advantage of only one point! The American team Brun and Dorgan were third overall. Reigning world champion Mike Reynolds ended sixth overall. Reynolds: "I knew it was gonna be hard. There's a new winner now. I can live with that". The Dutch team Neeleman en Schrier took the fifth place. Mark Neeleman: "We had a good start in the last race, we finished 6th. We sailed very stable all week, pity we didn't win one. But we are satisfied." Coach Maurice Paardenkoper agrees: "They sailed neat."

Winner Fredrik Lööf was a bronze medallist at the Sydney 2000 Olympics in the Finn Class and is reigning Finn World Champion. He is a relatively new face in Star sailing having switched after the Olympics from Finn to Star.
