Optimist European Championships

Day three of the Optimist Europeans saw rather stronger winds up to 18 knots but without the Atlantic rollers of yesterday. Three races were sailed to complete 8 of the scheduled 12.
Among the girls Mateja Petronijevic (Croatia) had three straight wins to open up a 31 point gap over her nearest rival Stine Paeper (GER). Overnight leader Agueda Suria totally misread race 6 and, with an OCS already discarded, slipped back to 6th place.

In the boys event the two leaders Henrique Duarte of Brasil and Yasushi Kondo of Japan remained locked in battle for the open prize while another Croatian Stjepan Cesic moved into third over-all and best European. "Local hero" Joaquin Blanco, son of the Finn Class champion of the same name, remains second European and has a big second discard to apply after tomorrow's scheduled three races.

The British again had a good day with Ed Powys of Restronguet scoring just 12 points from the three races. With three boys in the top twelve another "Hagen Daaz" evening was declared!
