Mistral European Championships

The conditions were perfect for the start of the Mistral European Championships in Marseille, France, sunny, with a building Mistral wind starting at about 12 knots and reaching 22-25 knots by the last race yesterday.
For the first 3 days the men will race in two fleets to decide the top 50% for the finals on days 4,5 and 6.

There was a very big swell running, making for very skillful sailing and also making it tricky to sight the windward mark. The wind built through the day, so that conditions for the second race were pretty extreme, so much so that 12 of the 38 strong womens fleet were unable to finish the course.

So a day to forgot for some, but an epic days racing for others. One of those days that stick in your memory for a long time to come.

Leading the Mens Group A is Miarczynski (POL) high wind guru, and now also sailing in the Formula windsurfing class with success. He won both his heats, as did Bontemps (FRA) in Mens Group B, with defending European Champion Alexander Guyader (FRA) in second.

Leading the womens fleet is Italian super star and Olympic 2000 Gold Medallist Alessandra Sensini, with French girls in second and third, 2000 Olympic representative Lise Vidal, and Eugenie Raffin.
