The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session of 13 September 2000 confirmed the nomination of Paul Henderson as a member of the IOC.
Amongst the first to congratulate Paul were the International Technical Officials of the International Sailing Federation at the welcome dinner hosted by the International Sailing Federation at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia on the evening following the announcement. Paul commented: "This nomination is not just an incredible honour for me, but also for sailing."
A total of 14 candidates, from an original 48 proposals of candidature, representing International Federations (5), National Olympic Committees (8) and the International Paralympic Committee (1) were elected as IOC Members. Paul who is a past Olympian in the Finn and Flying Dutchman will certainly serve sailing and all International Federations at the highest level. Henderson will remain a member of the IOC for as long as he is President of the ISAF. President since 1994, Henderson is due to be re-elected on 11 November 2000 at the ISAF General Assembly where he stands unopposed as Presidential candidate.
Henderson is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF).
