After a kick off at Cowes in the South of England for the America's Cup Jubilee and the Prada International 12-metre Class World Championship the latest venue for the 12 Metres is Sardinia where the boats will be based in Porto Cervo.
The turquoise waters of the Costa Smeralda is where the Prada Veteran Boat Rally kicks off, with the second stage of the Prada Challenge for Classic Yachts, a unique circuit of regattas for yachts of tradition.
Created in 1982 by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, this Italian event reunites 55 yachts this year. The fleet will be divided into four categories: classic, vintage, Spirit of Tradition and the 12-metre class yachts.
The focus will be on the 12-metre class who are returning in force to Porto Cervo for the first time since the World Championship was fought on these same waters in 1987. Eight boats will be bearing the American flag which have travelled across the Atlantic especially for the America's Cup Jubilee and continued on to compete in the Mediterranean circuit. Among the classic 12 Metres will be Columbia from Boston who was once based in the Mediterranean There will also be Nyala of Prada boss Pratizio Bertelli, and Alexander Falk's Flica II. Prada and Flica II finished second and third respectively in their class at the Prada World Championship, during the America's Cup Jubilee regatta at Cowes recently. In the absence of the Title Champion Sovereign, will be desperately trying to gain points on the circuit.
