Hobie Cat 16 European Championships

The 28th Hobie Cat 16 European Championships in Vassiliki, Lefkas, Greece began yesterday with the first of two days of qualifying rounds, plus Women’s, Masters’ and Youths’ championships.

The 118 teams from 16 countries arrived in the small fishing village of Vassiliki on the Greek Ionian island of Lefkas for the first ever Hobie Championships to be held in Greece.

The final rounds start from tomorrow and Wednesday when approximately 20 teams who will have qualified from the qualification round join the 47 pre-qualified skippers.

Hot names to look out for are MITCH BOOTH - former Olympic Silver medallist in the Tornado class, CLAUDE THELIER from Guadeloupe who finished second in the 2000 Hobie Cat 16 World Championships, DETLEF MOHR - 6 times European Champion and ALBERTO SONINO who won the Hobie Tiger World Championships at Lake Garda, Italy on Saturday.

British interest is strong in the Youth fleet where JONATHON WORTHINGTON and MARK QUAYLE lead the placings.

Also joining the finals tomorrow is SIMON MORGAN - founder of Wildwind Holidays who are hosting the Championships in Vassiliki. He is currently the Greek National Champion and was British Champion in 1999.
