Close Finish In Sydney harbour

After a five-mile scuffle, which started at the Heads with Logica in the lead, BP in second and LG Flatron closing in,
BP triumphed at the finish line of Leg Four of the BT Global Challenge, with LG Flatron a boatlength behind and Logica merely spectating some hundred metres astern. BP had regained the lead in the shadow of Garden Island - just a half-mile from the finish line - when LG Flatron slipped up on their final gybe. In the light morning breeze the chutes were collapsing and unmanageable - when they finally filled BP had pulled ahead, scrapping out a lead of nary two boatlengths. LG Flatron attempted to block BPÕs wind from behind, and possibly force another gybe. But the crew aboard BP kept steady and focused, holding LG Flatron at bay until they crossed the finish line abreast the Opera House, only seconds apart, amid a crush of spectator boats.

The team members of LG Flatron, just one boatlength astern, paused from their duties to applaud BP for their spirited competition. Logica watched the duel as they approached from Bradleys Head, and completed the leg somberly, just four minutes later.
