The Mayor of County Cork has confirmed that Cork County Council is to allocate 30,000 Euros to the upcoming ISAF Team Racing World Championship which will be held in Schull later this year.
Mr Jim Daly, speaking on behalf of the local authority said the council "has acknowledged the fact that the upcoming ISAF event will be a major boost not just for Schull, but for all of West Cork.
"We are delighted to be associated with any initiatives that promote the region on a global scale."
Staged every two years in key sailing destinations around the world the Mayor of Schull heartily congratulated everyone involved in helping to organise the headline event.
In 2009, the International Sailing Federation held its Team Racing World Championship in Perth, Australia but from 27 August to 4 September it will be Schull's time to shine.
The ninth edition of the ISAF Team Racing World Championship in Schull Harbour is being organised by Fastnet Marine and the Outdoor Education Centre (FMOEC).
Following the successful launch of an under 21 competition at the 2005 Team Worlds, the 2011 championship will again feature racing in both the open competition for the ISAF Team Racing World Championship trophy, and in a Youth Competition for the Ciudad de Gandia Trophy. The age category has been amended to Under 19.
Mr David Harte, who is the manager of FMOEC said, "We are delighted to host the 2011 ISAF Team Racing World Championship. We are looking forward to welcoming sailors from all around the globe, to providing the best team racing possible, and to offering the unique hospitality of Ireland."
The ninth edition will be the second to have been hosted in Ireland, following on from the 1999 Worlds held in Dun Laoghaire when New Zealand took the title.
The current holders of the ISAF Team Racing World Championship Trophy are Team USA1 from the New York Yacht Club. Australia holds the Under 21 Trophy.
