Some of the top windsurfers from Canada, United States, Cuba, Guatemala, Netherlands Antilles, Venezuela, Peru, Uruguay, Puerto Rico and Mexico are set to compete with places in the 2011 Pan-American Games up for grabs.

The event will last for three days in the picturesque location of Cozumel. There has already been racing on the water after yesterdays practice race saw a lot of competition between the Mexican team, with talent going against experience.

David Mier, who at 33 has represented Mexico in the last three Olympic Games went head-to-head with compatriot Mauricio Martinez, who is 19-years-old.

Martinez proved to be a tough competitor and won the practice race. However Mier has been the better performer recently after finishing 12th at the Rolex Miami OCR compared to Martinez who placed 22nd at Biscayne Bay.

In the women's category there will be a battle between Demita de Vega (MEX) and Dominique Vallee (CAN). Vallee won gold at the 2007 Pan-American Games but Vega brings some form into this year's North American Championship after she finished 13th at the Rolex Miami OCR, two places ahead of Vallee.

Apart from the 2011 Pan-American Games in Guadalajara, the event also counts towards qualification for the 2011 RS:X Junior World Championship to be held in San Francisco in July.
