470 2011 Development Programme

Supporting the current and future generations of 470 sailors is key to the development strategy of the International 470 Class Association.
For 2011, the 470 Class Development Programmes build on the successes of past years and particularly 2010, when the Class supported over 300 sailors from more than 40 nations in their sailing careers.

Delivering training clinics, equipment, financial support and charter boats, the 2011 470 Development Programmes will provide a range of support to sailors:

470 Regional Clinics - the 470 Baltic Training Clinic in Lithuania from 7-11 May 2011, opens the 2011 Development Programme. The clinic is organized in partnership with the Lithuanian 470 National Class Association and scheduled just prior to the international event, the 2011 Lithuanian Cup. World class coach Nikos Drougas (GRE) will lead the five-day clinic.

470 Championship Clinics - delivered by the world's top 470 coaches, our pre-Championship race training provides expert coaching at the venue of the 470 Championships, providing critical race training and venue familiarization in the final preparation and training days.

470 International Solidarity Programme (ISP) - focused on those starting out in their sailing career with the provision of equipment support and financial support to enable participation. In partnership with Olimpic Sails, two sets of brand new sails and two sets of excellent condition used sails will be awarded to teams. Supporting participation at Class Championships, financial awards will be given to either entirely cover the cost of Championship entry fees or provide significant subsidies to teams.

470 Olympic Solidarity Programme (OSP) - focused on the elite level 470 sailors who are campaigning for the Olympic Games. This year, in partnership with Mackay Boats the 470 Class is providing eight charter boats for the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships in Australia, 3-18 December 2011. Recognizing the distance for many teams to travel and related transport costs, the 470 Class is providing the charter boats for the men's and women's fleets at a significantly subsidised cost of EUR300 per team. Available for training prior to the World Championships getting underway, the schedule of racing in Perth will then enable the boats to first be used by eight men's 470 teams before being used by the women.

470 Financial Grants - supporting our youngest 470 sailors, those under 22 years of age, two financial grants are offered. The André Cornu Grant provides a financial award of EUR1000 to each of the winning crews of the boys and girls two-person dinghy event at the 2010 ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships who compete at either the 2011 470 Class Junior World Championships or the 2011 470 Class World Championships 2011.

The Junior Support Programme awards EUR900 to the youngest teams (combined age of helm and crew) at the 470 Junior World Championships. A EUR900 award is given to each of the two youngest women's crews and the youngest men's crew.

Transition Support - aiming to attract the best sailors to the 470 and supporting the transition between classes, the 470 Class provides free entry fees to the top three girls and boys teams at the 2011 420 World Championships who go on to compete at either the 2012 470 Junior World Championships or the 2012 470 Junior European Championships.

In launching the 2011 470 Development Programme Stanislav Kassarov, 470 Class President, commented, "The support the 470 class contributes through our Development Programmes makes a significant difference and boost to sailors.

"Our programmes are designed to respond to the sailors' needs and provide relevant support whatever the competition level of the sailors; whether it be the youth sailor at a pre-event clinic prior to attending their first Junior Championships, sailors in transition between classes or the aspiring Olympian who receives support to attend the 470 World Championships. In 2010, we doubled our budget for development programmes and this commitment has continued for 2011."
