After an excellent day of racing at the 420 World Championship in Brest, France there have been big changes on the leaderboards, with Tomas SILVA and Francisco GOMES (POR) now leading the open fleet and Maria Stella TURIZIO and Maria Carolina RENDANO (ITA) taking over at the top of the women’s leaderboard.
Sunshine and 14 knots of wind allowed all scheduled races to take place yesterday. Overnight leaders in the women’s fleet, Jo BRIGG and Mary ROOK (GBR), had a tough day with finishes 23 and 25 wiping out the 21 point lead they held on Tuesday. TURIZIO and RENDANO capitalized on their rival’s mistakes with a bullet in race seven and a seventh in the following race to open up an eleven point lead at the top.
Behind the leading pair 2005 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Champions, Marie LUMEAU and Claire BOSSARD (FRA) had another good day with a twelfth and a fifth place moving them into third place, just two points behind BRIGG and ROOK.
ISAF Youth Worlds sailors are having an even bigger impact on the open fleet and are currently occupying the top two places. In Busan, Korea, Adam ROBERTS and Nick MARTIN (USA) finished one point and one place above SILVA and GOMES in fourth. Yesterday in Brest it was the Portuguese pair who impressed the most, with bullets in the first two races making up for their DSQ in race two on Tuesday. They then sailed to ninth in the day’s final race to finish seven points clear of the Americans in second. Simon MORICEAU and Mathieu COU (FRA) had a consistent day with finishes of 5,7,4 moving them up to third overall.
Racing continues today with the final races scheduled for tomorrow.
